Connect access to a feature
An application's permission should support a function you actually use. A map needs location for navigation, while a simple utility may not need continuous access to your microphone. Permissions alone do not prove an app is malicious, but unexplained broad access deserves review.
Use Android's built-in settings. This exercise does not require installing a cleanup or privacy scanner with its own broad permissions.
Review a manageable group
- Open Settings and locate the permission manager or the selected application's permissions. Start with location, camera and microphone rather than trying to change every permission at once.
- Match each grant with a known feature. Check whether the current choice is limited to use of the app, a one-time grant or broader background access, where those options are offered.
- Reduce an unnecessary grant using the supported control. For an app you no longer need, consider uninstalling it after preserving required data through its normal supported process.
- Test the legitimate task, such as a video call or map lookup. Grant only the access needed for that task if it prompts again. A feature that no longer works may need a narrower justified permission restored.
Verify actual use
Where your Android version provides a privacy dashboard or recent-access view, inspect which application used a sensitive permission and when. The displayed period and detail can vary. Treat it as evidence of recorded access, not a complete history of every activity on the phone.
Review special access separately
Accessibility services, device administration, notification access and VPN configuration can grant capabilities beyond ordinary camera or location permissions. Read the operating system's explanation before enabling such access for an unfamiliar app. A request framed as optimisation can still be a significant security change.
Respect managed-device policy
On a business-managed device, some controls may be enforced by the administrator. Report an unexplained grant rather than removing required management or security software. A personal device has different ownership and support responsibilities.
Repeat after changes
Check permissions after installing a new app, changing its role or noticing unexpected access indicators. Keep the operating system and applications updated. The useful outcome is a small set of permissions you can explain and a working device, not a promise that permission review alone detects every harmful application.
